AIG repaying nearly $4B in federal loans
American International Group Inc. says it is repaying nearly $4 billion in federal bailout loans.The insurer said Monday it will pay back the taxpayer-funded loans with proceeds from a recently completed $4.4 billion debt sale at its aircraft leasing company, International Lease Finance Corp.The payment will trim AIG’s outstanding balance on its credit line with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to about $15 billion. The move comes two months after the Uniondale, N.Y.-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. “High speed Internet has a huge impact on the industry,” said Verle Sutton, who publishes Reel Time, an analytical report of the paper industry. “We don’t write letters to each other as much as we used to. Invoicing and banking are going online, too.” A “Do Not Mail” campaign, which allows participants to opt out of receiving unsolicited junk mail, also added to the downfall of the envelope industry, Mr. Sutton said. Consumer activists in several states, including New York, are working to turn the opt-in campaign into a law. Throughout the 15-hour National Envelope auction on Tuesday, the sale price increased by more than $50 million, according to Bloomberg News. Other bidders included private equity firm Sun Capital Partners Inc., based in Boca Raton, Fla., and Cenveo Inc., the manufacturer’s largest competitor, which is based in Stamford, Conn. The auction took place a year after National Envelope laid off 230 employees and curtailed production in its Long Island City, Queens, facility for economic reasons. Plants in Houston and Union, N.J., have also closed since 2008. National Envelope’s general counsel, Dale Nissenbaum, declined to comment on the asset sale or bankruptcy. In the June bankruptcy filing, the company cited both estimated assets and debts of up to $500 million. National Envelope topped Crain’s annual list of the area’s largest women-owned companies for the past two years, reporting $866 million in revenue in 2008, up 6.7% from its previous-year number. It was owned by Chairman William Ungar, who founded the company in 1952, and his four daughters.
