The year 2009 was definitely no slouch on the silver screen. Viewers were treated to excellent foreign films, a blockbuster comedy from the creators of Old School and the return of Quentin Tarantino with the oddly titled Inglourious Basterds. 1. Crazy Heart. There is a lot to be said for the type of film which follows an older character trying to fight off failure. It worked with The Wrestler and Mickey Rourke and it certainly works with Jeff Bridges in this film. Maggie Gyllenhall is excellent as the journalist and love interest for the much older Bridges. Traveling all around America through country music dives, Bridges tries to overcome his addiction and right the ship. See this new release on HBO in HD.
2. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. There had already been a Bad Lieutenant – a very pulpy film by Abel Ferrara starring Harvey Keitel – but this one took the New York story to a post-Katrina New Orleans. Nicolas Cage stars as the wigged-out, drug-taking cop who has all sorts of bad ideas about how to handle his job. Legendary director Werner Herzog directs, while Eva Mendes costars.
3. The Hangover. It may be a little childish at time; it may be playing for cheap laughs at others; nonetheless, The Hangover is one of the best films of 2009. The need for a comedy on this level simply never diminishes. Instead of a bachelor party romp, the viewer gets a retracing of the steps of the night before, and it isn’t pretty. Bradley Cooper is funny as the de facto group leader, but it’s wild cards Zach Galifianakis and Mike Tyson that steal the show. See this picture on HBO in high definition.
4. Sin Nombre. Americans are constantly reviewing the terms of the debate on immigration, but there are a precious few films which get into the other side of the story: where the immigrants are coming from, and why. That’s exactly where Sin Nombre is coming from. Families are torn apart and reunited as poverty stricken Guatemalans try to make the trek to the United States in this film. The resulting story is as moving as any other picture of the year. See it on satellite TV premium film networks.
5. Inglourious Basterds. Its hard to leave a Tarantino film off of any ‘best of’ list for the year. Inglourious Basterds imagines a scenario in which a bunch of U.S. Jewish renegade soldiers take out Nazis in daring missions across Europe. It is a fresh look at an old story, done with such humor and pizzazz that you know only Tarantino could be behind it. Featuring Brad Pitt as the Southern accented commander.
